Effective date: 21 October 2026. This notice explains how Mauritius.name intends to process personal information when receiving feedback on independently proposed legislation. The submission system is currently closed pending final technical and moderation testing.
Who manages this platform?
Data Controller: Dewandranath Kissoondoyal. Initiative: Mauritius.name, Independent Civic Consultation and Legislative Reform. Privacy and consultation contact: consultations@mauritius.name. This platform is independent and is not operated by the Government of Mauritius or the National Assembly.
Information collected
When the consultation system opens, submissions may include the title of a proposed Bill, the clause or section discussed, feedback category, written comments, alternative proposed wording, reference links, an optional display name or pseudonym, an optional contact email address, publication preferences and submission date. Technical data, including IP or browser information, may be processed by website, hosting and security services for site operation and abuse prevention. Do not submit national identity numbers, medical records or unnecessary personal information about yourself or others.
Why we use information
We use submissions to assess proposed legislation, consider amendments, maintain consultation records, create response summaries, prevent abuse and, where specifically authorised, publish moderated comments. Participation is voluntary. Submission review and public publication are separate decisions. Contributors must acknowledge this notice to submit, and public display requires an additional, unticked-by-default permission.
Public publication is optional
Comments are not published automatically. Moderators examine every submission. Only contributions with the contributor’s explicit publication permission and subsequent moderator approval may appear publicly. Public displays may include the approved comment, suggested legal wording and the display name or pseudonym, or ‘Anonymous contributor’ where no name was supplied. A contact email address is never displayed by the plugin. Contributors who do not grant publication permission may still submit feedback for private consideration.
Moderation and editorial standards
We may reject or remove spam, threats, discriminatory abuse, defamatory allegations, personal information about third parties, unlawful material or submissions irrelevant to the consultation. We may redact unnecessary identifying details before considering public display. Material changes to a contributor’s proposed wording should be confirmed with the contributor where practical. Giving publication permission does not guarantee that a comment will be published.
Access and service providers
Private submission records are accessible to authorised website administrators and appointed moderators. Hosting, domain, security, email-routing and website service providers may process technical or service data as necessary. Providers currently involved in the website infrastructure include Bluehost and Cloudflare; installed WordPress extensions and any analytics services will be reviewed for purposes, transfers and data protection controls before the submission system opens. Processing or transfers outside Mauritius must comply with applicable legal requirements.
Retention and review
We intend to retain unpublished feedback only for the period needed to assess consultations and prepare revisions, with a scheduled routine that ordinarily removes older, unpublished records after approximately 18 months, subject to system operation and legal obligations. Publication-approved contributions will be reviewed for ongoing relevance and removed when no longer justified or following a valid applicable withdrawal or erasure request. The retention procedure and backup policy will be reviewed before public collection begins.
Privacy rights
Under Mauritius’s Data Protection Act 2017, data subjects may have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and withdrawal of consent where applicable. Requests may be addressed to consultations@mauritius.name. We may request reasonable verification before changing or disclosing records. Contributors may also contact the Mauritius Data Protection Office. Withdrawal of permission for publication does not automatically undo lawful processing already completed or control copies made by third parties.
Security
We aim to use HTTPS, access restrictions, moderation, anti-spam checks and routine software maintenance. No internet service is completely risk-free. Security incidents will be assessed and notified where required by applicable law.
Cookies and analytics
The site may use technical cookies required for essential functions. Other analytics or marketing technologies may also operate through installed services and must be audited, documented and subjected to appropriate notice and consent mechanisms where required before collecting public submissions.
Contact and revisions
Contact the Data Controller at consultations@mauritius.name for public consultation enquiries and privacy requests. This notice may be revised when the consultation service changes. Material changes will be identified by a new effective date. The online legislative submission service is not yet accepting public feedback.
